Our mission is to instill an understanding and appreciation of the common thread that connects modern biological study at all levels, from molecules to ecosystems. The biological sciences as a whole began to boom in the Cold War era. As a result, beginning in the late 1960s, entire departments of organismic biology began to spring up, many focusing on ‘ecology and evolutionary biology,’ or ‘ecology, evolution, and behavior,’ offering doctoral degrees in the area, and enrolling even more practitioners to evolutionary biology. The Gerhold lab uses C. elegans germline stem cells to study the complexities of cell division in vivo.
For good reason, evolutionary biologists now sometimes speak in terms of theoretical and applied evolutionary biology, indicating that the scientific discipline continues to prosper as it reaches out to new areas of research. Biology students practice and apply their knowledge in both field and laboratory settings, and master basic skills including statistical analysis, various laboratory methods, and techniques and taxonomic (identification) skills.
A course in biological sciences will combine practical and theory work with a mixture of lectures, seminars and lab work. Our Biology program is versatile, allowing you to complement your Genetics, Cell Biology, Physiology, Ecology, Plant Biology, and Human Anatomy courses with studies from the arts, humanities, languages, and mathematics areas. The Department, like the discipline, is diverse, offering both undergraduate and graduate students opportunities to study living systems at the level of genes and proteins to entire ecosystems.
ASCB®,” The American Society for Cell Biology®,” ASCB AN INTERNATIONAL FORUM FOR CELL BIOLOGY®,” Molecular Biology of the Cell®,” and DORA®” are registered trademarks of The American Society for Cell Biology. Indeed by the middle decades of the 1990s, evolutionary biology was already being wedded to medicine, and especially epidemiology as interest in emerging pathogens grew and as the principles of evolutionary biology were increasingly applied to more practical ends not only in medicine, but also in agriculture, computer sciences, and even robotics.
Graduate students from Cristescu Lab collecting environmental DNA at the Gault Nature Reserve, Mount Saint Hilaire. Biology: A natural science concerned with the study of life and living organisms. The branch of science which deals with the study of cells and their organelles. The College of Science Biology program provides students with a broad understanding of the organization and processes of life, from molecules and cells through tissues and organs, to populations, ecosystems, and evolution.
Nearly half of Dickinson biology students study off-campus for a semester or more, providing them a wider perspective and facilitating meaningful engagement in their field. For example, what is learned about the physiology of yeast cells can also apply to human cells. Students can discover more concepts in biology, explore elaborate tests and exam resources by registering at BYJU’S. Biology degrees are extremely diverse – ‘biology’ or ‘biological sciences’ covers a wide array of specialist subjects.
The mission of the organization is to recognize and support academic excellence in the biological sciences and encourage undergraduate research, primarily through undergraduate research awards and conferences. Using cutting-edge live-cell imaging approaches, the Hayer lab investigates how cells coordinate with each other during collective cell migration. Our faculty actively pursue extramural funding to support research programs that also train undergraduate students who act as collaborators in the development of that research.
